How ASONOG is supporting Tolupan indigenous and peasant women resilience and rights through community strengthening in Yoro

ASONOG in Honduras leaves no one behind, how about you? Share your story!
In the mountains of Yoro, northern Honduras, ASONOG is transforming the lives of indigenous Tolupan and peasant women through the project ‘Indigenous Tolupan and peasant women of Honduras: Defending rights and promoting autonomy’. The initiative is a response to the structural exclusion and historical violence experienced by these communities.
The project focuses on legal empowerment, access to land and protection from gender-based violence. Safe spaces for political participation and self-organisation have been created. Women receive training on their individual and collective rights, with an emphasis on the defence of ancestral territory, sustainable agriculture and community governance.
In addition, the advocacy capacities of women's networks as human rights defenders are being strengthened to respond to women victims of violence and returnees. These actions include lobbying and dialogue with local authorities at the municipal level, promoting safer and more responsive environments for community demands.
By recovering traditional knowledge and promoting local advocacy platforms, ASONOG strengthens collective resilience based on identity, dignity and social justice.
This work aligns with several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and with the principles of Leaving No One Behind including:
-
SDG 1 – No Poverty: Access to land and community-based livelihoods.
-
SDG 5 – Gender Equality: Political participation and defence of women’s rights.
-
SDG 10 – Reduced Inequalities: Empowerment of historically excluded indigenous women.
-
SDG 16 – Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions: Legal training and human rights defence.
-
SDG 17 – Partnerships for the Goals: Collaboration with indigenous and local organisations.
