Forus

Supporting our regional members

The 7 regional coalitions members of Forus constitute a space for national platforms to come together and participate in regional initiatives. The 7 Regional Coalitions – REPONGAC, SADC-CNGO, REPAOC, MESA, ADA, Concord and PIANGO - cover respectively Central Africa, Southern Africa, West Africa, Latin America, Asia, Europe and the Pacific. They play a crucial role to catalyse transnational collaborations and to empower the voice of the sector at the regional level.

Regional Coalitions lead and participate in Forus’ activities, including through working groups focusing on priorities for civil society organisations around the globe – from capacity development to Agenda 2030, digitalisation, enabling environment, financing for sustainable development and much more. Forus has an ongoing partnership with all its regional members. In addition, Forus regularly provides capacity development to its regional members, which can and often include financial support, for the implementation of a set of activities. In 2022, out of its seven regional members, Forus supports six of them, listed below. They have decided to focus on three main streams of work: (1) enabling environment; (2) financing for sustainable development and (3) strategic and institutional strengthening. Below you can find a snapshot of current activities carried out with Forus Regional Coalitions.

ADA - Asia Development Alliance

Asia

ADA, with Forus' collaboration, aims to strengthen and empower the capacity of national civil society organisations platforms and others working for the upliftment of vulnerable and marginalised communities across Asia - by organising a series of GALA trainings and supporting civil society organisations from Pakistan, Sri Lanka and the Philippines to share their experience in terms of Voluntary National Reviews (VNRs). ADA’s aim is to bring together a wide range of civil society experts and activists to enhance and influence public policies and their effectiveness. As a regional platform, ADA focuses specifically on the impact of civic engagement and advocates for the fulfilment and monitoring of Agenda 2030, with a special focus on SDG 16 Plus. It does so by providing ground-breaking and innovative capacity building tools and programmes to its national members, while learning from their invaluable expertise, experiences and unique perspectives.

La Mesa de Articulación de Asociaciones Nacionales y Redes de ONGs de América Latina y el Caribe

Latin America and the Caribbean

La Mesa with Forus' collaboration aims to strengthen its platform through a better articulation among its members, developing an analysis of the context that allows for a consensus on collaborative work at regional level. The goal is to create a joint action plan to build a common voice on issues where consensus can be reached, thus strengthening the platform's voice in different regional and international forums. Its activities include an analysis of threats and opportunities for an enabling environment for civil society in the region, exchange and learning in consensus building and sharing of concrete experiences such as the Light Reports on the Agenda 2030.

PIANGO - Pacific Islands Association of Non-Governmental Organisations

Pacific

PIANGO, with Forus’ collaboration, supports several of its National Liaison Units with capacity development initiatives. More specifically, PIANGO’s project gives the opportunity to the Solomon Islands Tuvalu Association of NGOs (TANGO), the Civil Society Forum of Tonga and the Marshal Islands Council for NGOs (MICNGOs) to be able to convene workshops to review their accounting practices and identify areas to improve in line with Development Effectiveness Principles. This initiative is part of a long-term and ongoing learning process to articulate a Pacific vision for accountable and effective civil society organisations, to develop common language and tools and to build trust with stakeholders of PIANGO and its members.

REPAOC - Réseau des Plate-formes nationales d'ONG d'Afrique de l'Ouest

West Africa

REPAOC, with the support of Forus, aims to strengthen its coalition institutionally, improve the engagement of its members and interact with other regional coalitions on other continents. For in reality, with some differences, REPAOC believes that the problems and challenges of civil society organisations are similar, whether it is the restriction of civic space, the scarcity of funding or the challenge of adapting to the digital environment imposed by the current health crisis. REPAOC will focus on identifying the challenges of an enabling environment in the region, and on financing sustainable development ahead of the 2022 "Finance in Common" summit, to be hosted by the African Development Bank and the European Development Bank.

REPONGAC - Réseau des Plate-formes des ONG de l'Afrique Centrale

Central Africa

REPONGAC, in collaboration with Forus, aims to put the voice of citizens at the center of development: to address the shrinking civic space in Central Africa so that it becomes a region where institutions serve communities and where citizens can actively participate in social, economic and political development and governance. To achieve this, REPONGAC is putting in place initiatives to have an organised, structured civil society that implements the principles of legitimacy, transparency and accountability. REPONGAC encourages communities to focus on structured dialogue, lobbying and advocacy with those in power, such as parliamentarians and local authorities, before engaging in protest and confrontation. Their work consists of monitoring violations of the freedoms of association, peaceful assembly and expression and assessing the impact of laws on the narrowing of civic space. Through awareness-raising campaigns among several of their national members and advocacy missions, their aim is to involve and mobilise the general public. Finally, they organise several roundtables and participatory debates to facilitate people's involvement and participation in development policies and practices.

SADC-CNGO - Southern Africa Development Community Council of Non-Governmental Organizations

Southern Africa

SADC-CNGO, with Forus’ collaboration, aims to assess the progress made towards the engagement of non-state actors in regional governance; highlighting key challenges and recommendations and facilitating the mapping of activities beyond 2021 in order to adapt to current trends. The main objectives of the platform are to encourage its national members to engage in constructive and focused endeavours towards strengthening their capacity to participate in democratic and governance processes across the region. With virtual forums and the development of common positions papers on the state of democracy and governance, national members are supported to develop regional policy positions to be amplified by the SADC-CNGO Secretariat and shared with their respective governments at national level. SADC-CNGO also encourages the self & peer assessment of its national members to identify common strengths and priorities.
