Tanzania

Aurelio Mofuga is a Tanzanian technologist, digital rights advocate, and storyteller exploring the intersection of emerging technologies, culture, and youth empowerment. His practice spans digital inclusion, immersive storytelling, and interactive art, using VR, AR, and projection mapping to amplify digital inclusion and youth empowerment.

He has collaborated with organizations such as European Union, UNICEF, the International Finance Corporation, and CIPE, producing research, creative projects, and digital innovations that connect local struggles to global conversations on equity, justice, and the future of digital rights. Through projects like Daladala Verse and Sculptures of Light, Aurelio reimagines Tanzania’s histories, public spaces, and civic futures. His work has been exhibited internationally, including at ARS Electronica in Austria and the Humboldt Forum in Germany.

Passionate about digital inclusion, equitable access, and creative expression, Aurelio continues to push boundaries at the nexus of technology, policy, and storytelling to ensure African youth are not just participants but leaders in shaping the digital future.

My journey in internet governance and digital rights advocacy began with research and policy engagement. In 2022, I collaborated with the Center for International Private Enterprise (CIPE) to produce a research and advisory paper on enabling remote work for East African youth. This work exposed the structural barriers, policy gaps, connectivity limitations, and affordability challenges that hinder equitable internet access. The findings reinforced my commitment to addressing these issues through both advocacy and practical interventions. I have also worked on the frontline of digital inclusion in the humanitarian and development sectors. Partnering with organisations such as the International Finance Corporation, Save the Children, Oxfam, and the World Food Programme, I supported blockchain-based humanitarian payment pilots in Tanzania, Haiti, Colombia, and Vanuatu. These initiatives enabled women-led SMEs and smallholder farmers to receive direct, secure financial assistance, demonstrating how digital payment systems, when well-governed, can empower the most vulnerable.

Alongside policy and technology work, I use multimedia storytelling to bridge cultural preservation and digital rights advocacy. My approach combines immersive media leveraging Virtual and Augmented Reality, interactive installations, documentary filmmaking with participatory community engagement. In 2023, I collaborated with UNICEF and OnaStories on the AncestAR project, training twelve Tanzanian creatives in augmented reality storytelling to preserve the lost cultural heritage and unlock new digital markets for their work through Instagram Filter. This project not only empowered local artists with new skills but also demonstrated how creative technology can increase representation and participation in the global digital economy. In 2024, I led Daladala Verse, a VR film and documentary project exploring the sustainability of Tanzania’s public transport system while elevating the voices of marginalised female transport workers and young people. Supported by the EU and endorsed and celebrated by the IFC, Daladala Verse was exhibited at international digital art festivals including ARS Electronica in Austria and the Humboldt Forum in Germany. I have also directed Sculptures of Light, an installation and documentary that uses historic monuments as metaphors for pressing modern issues youth unemployment, climate change, and gender inequality connecting local struggles to global conversations about justice and equity.
