Across the Pacific Islands, women are too often excluded from political and climate decision-making spaces. PIANGO is working to change that.
Through a partnership with the International Republican Institute (IRI), PIANGO is fostering gender-responsive climate policy and environmental governance across Vanuatu, Fiji, and the Solomon Islands. The initiative builds on conversations from the People’s Forum at the CSO Village in Tonga and was recently advanced through a validation workshop in Nadi.
With its regional approach and support from national CSO platforms like FCOSS, DSE, and VANGO, the initiative is equipping women leaders, advocating for inclusive policymaking, and helping embed gender equity in the 2050 Strategy for a Blue Pacific Continent.
“Economic growth can only happen when the lives of women are improved,” said PIANGO Deputy Chair Drew Havea. “Civil society has a role to remind parliamentarians to talk about women and youth at all levels of government.”
This work aligns with several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and with the principles of Leaving No One Behind including:
-
SDG 5 – Gender Equality: Empowering women to engage in environmental governance and leadership at local and national levels
-
SDG 13 – Climate Action: Promoting inclusive climate resilience planning that considers the differentiated impacts on women and men
-
SDG 16 – Peace, Justice & Strong Institutions: Strengthening participatory governance and accountability through civil society engagement
-
SDG 17 – Partnerships for the Goals: Building coalitions between regional CSOs, governments, and international partners to mainstream gender in climate policy
