Youth, Gender Rights, and Civic Freedom: Join the March With Us movement for gender justice in 2026!

From battling gender-based violence to addressing the intersectionality of indigenous rights, disability advocacy, gender issues, and diverse masculinities, every year, March With Us highlights innovative approaches in the gender justice movement.

Since 2021, we've shared the stories and co-created podcasts and documentaries with Forus members and over 80 activists, including Angela Davis, Aruna Roy, Hala Al-Karib, the 1 for 8 billion campaign, Alice Nkom, Lina Alhathoul, Line Niedeggen, Sonita Alizadeh, Matcha Phorn-in, the Instituto Marielle Franco and many more.

For the 2026 edition, once again we will adopt a year-long strategy to increase visibility of the March With Us stories, and unify advocacy efforts pushing for a gender focus on public policies across various international events.

This year’s focus “Youth, Gender Rights, and Civic Freedom explores:

A solutions-driven, movement-powered call for gender justice, youth leadership, and expanded enabling environment for civil society.

Expanding civic engagement for gender justice

Restrictions on civil society—including surveillance, funding limits, online harassment, criminalisation of protest, and repression of feminist and LGBTQ+ activism—are increasingly constraining gender-rights movements worldwide. How can we promote a secure, well-resourced, and enabling environment where civil society organisations and gender equality movements can thrive, influence policy, and hold governments accountable?

With this year’s campaign, we will look at:

  • National and international policies that protect freedom of expression, association, and peaceful assembly.

  • Mechanisms that protect women human-rights defenders, LGBTQ+ activists, and grassroots organisers.

  • Digital rights at the intersection of gender and civic freedoms: privacy, data protection, platform accountability, and safer online environments for gender-rights advocacy.

Youth movements driving gender equality

From Argentina to Malawi, young activists are at the forefront of gender justice and yet face high systemic barriers: limited funding, lack of formal recognition, digital harassment, and exclusion from decision-making spaces. How can we recognise, resource, and elevate youth voices as equal partners shaping the gender-just and diverse futures ? This year’s campaign will explore:

  • Youth-led and youth-centered feminist organising as a key engine of social transformation.

  • Participation pathways for youth in national gender policies, SDG implementation, and  decision-making processes.

  • Intersectional and intergenerational movements in gender advocacy

Post-2030 Agenda

The selection of the next United Nations Secretary-General in 2026—coinciding with António Guterres’s final year in office—comes as the world is preparing for the design and negotiation of the global development framework that will follow the 2030 Agenda. The next Secretary-General must embody a vision where gender equality is a core driver of global peace, development, and democratic societies. This year’s campaign will explore:

  • Bolder, intersectional framework for global gender equality

  • Gender-transformative policies that dismantle structural inequalities

  • A more accountable global governance system, including stronger monitoring and implementation mechanisms to ensure states deliver on gender-equality commitments beyond 2030.
