How CSCI supports communities affected by climate change in Côte d'Ivoire

In the face of climate challenges, the Convention de la Société Civile Ivoirienne (CSCI) is leading actions for climate justice, environmental protection, and inclusion. Through the Benkadi project, CSCI is standing with the most vulnerable—women, youth, persons with disabilities—ensuring they’re equipped, informed, and included in decision-making around climate and environmental policies. CSCI collaborates with sister civil society platforms from Benin (PASCIB), Mali (SECO-ONG), and Burkina Faso (SPONG), to address the escalating threat of climate change across West Africa.
The project is addressing two critical issues in Côte d’Ivoire:

Mitigating and adapting to coastal erosion in the southern regions, protecting communities from being displaced by rising seas.

Preserving 7 key protected areas across 10 regions, fighting back against harmful agricultural expansion and environmental degradation.
This is climate action powered by community voice, by local wisdom, and by people who refuse to be left behind.
This work aligns with several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and with the principles of Leaving No One Behind including:
- SDG 4 & 13 – Quality Education & Climate Action: Shifting the power by quipping communities with the knowledge to protect their land and adapt to a changing climate.
- SDG 5 & 15 – Gender Equality & Life on Land: Supporting women and protecting biodiversity go hand in hand.
- SDG 10 & 16 – Reduced Inequalities & Peace, Justice & Strong Institutions: Ensuring the inclusion of communities in civic and climate policy spaces.
- SDG 17 – Partnerships for the Goals: Working across West Africa and with international allies for greater impact.
