In the Atacora region of northern Benin, Plan International France and its partners are putting educational inclusion at the heart of their efforts to ensure that every young person, especially girls, can build a decent future. The aim is to give young people the tools to become agents of change in their communities.

The ALFA - Alternatives Éducatives et Formation Professionnelle project helps the most vulnerable children, teenagers and young people to achieve social and economic independence.

Mid-term figures:

  • 6 Community Education Centres opened, catering for 364 children;
  • A school success rate of 94.32% in the first year;
  • 72 women trained in income-generating activities and savings, who went on to train 799 other women;
  • 15 young people helped into the workforce with equipment;
  • 238 young people involved in 8 ‘Champions of Change’ clubs, to defend their rights and mobilise their communities.

This work aligns with several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and with the principles of Leaving No One Behind including:

  • SDG 4 – Quality Education: The project prioritizes access to inclusive and equitable education through Community Education Centres and support for school success, particularly targeting vulnerable children and youth.
  • SDG 5 – Gender Equality: By focusing on girls’ education and empowering women with training in income-generating activities, the project breaks gender barriers and promotes equality.
  • SDG 8 – Decent Work and Economic Growth: Training youth and women in vocational skills and income-generating activities supports economic empowerment and sustainable livelihoods, especially for marginalized groups.
  • SDG 10 – Reduced Inequalities: The initiative targets socially and economically disadvantaged populations, helping to reduce disparities in access to education and economic opportunities.
  • SDG 17 – Partnerships for the Goals: This is a collaborative project between Plan International France and local partners, demonstrating effective multi-stakeholder partnerships for sustainable development.
