Jhonatan Dueñas

Ecuador

Political scientist from the Central University of Ecuador with experience in political communication, document management, inter-institutional cooperation, and project implementation in the public, private, and civil society sectors. I have worked on initiatives related to democracy, transparency, citizen participation and the defence of human rights, contributing to research processes, electoral monitoring, situation analysis and the creation of advocacy campaigns. I am a dynamic person with leadership and coordination skills across sectors, always committed to strengthening democracy, citizen education and promoting political participation.

My motivation to become a young digital rights advocate stems from the conviction that the battles for equity, transparency, and inclusion have found a new battleground in the digital space. I want to be an advocate to ensure that technology amplifies marginalised voices, rather than silencing them, and thus build a digital environment where participation, equity and access to new spaces are fundamental pillars of our societies.

In my experience as a social media monitor within the European Union Election Observation Mission in Ecuador, I led the monitoring of digital campaigns and the identification of patterns of disinformation, observing the threats that erode the integrity of democratic processes. This experience not only strengthened my technical skills in social media analysis and early warning systems, but also solidified my determination to defend a digital ecosystem that prioritises equal participation, transparency of information and respect for human rights. I have also participated as a consultant for UNDP Ecuador in the project ‘Women's Political Participation 2025,’ where I developed data collection and analysis systems that promoted women's political participation by disseminating their profiles and political experience. Finally, my most significant work on internet governance and digital rights has been with Grupo FARO on the ‘Ecuador Decide’ project, where I designed and implemented research methodologies applied to democratic processes to then generate communication pieces that help make politics more accessible, especially to young people who consume this content through social media.
