Bulgaria

Nancy Borissova is a communication manager in the Center for Sustainable Communities Development. She has a bachelor degree in Journalism from the Sofia University and had been working as a freelance journalist in the past. She has experience working on projects focused on gender equality, youth empowerment, women's rights, Roma rights and minorities. Currently she is working also as a liaison officer of the Minority Rights Group International program MARIO focusing on minority rights and empowerment of grassroots organizations.

My experience in internet governance and digital rights combines communication, training, and advocacy work at local and international levels:

NEMO Project (EU) – Promoted digital safety and positive narratives through workshops with young people, creating tools for educators to tackle online discrimination against migrants.

BRIGHT Project – Trained young women seeking work abroad on safe and informed use of digital platforms, addressing risks of labour exploitation in agriculture and care sectors.

GEAR Project – Worked with Roma youth in a marginalised Bulgarian region to teach digital skills, fact-checking, and podcast production, launching a Roma youth web radio.

As a communication manager, I have also produced documentaries on labour rights, domestic violence, and honour-related abuses, using journalism to expose injustice and inform the public. My academic background in journalism has shaped my critical approach — double-checking facts, questioning sources, and reading every “Terms and Conditions” before clicking “accept.”

My master’s dissertation, The Influence of Russian Propaganda on the Media Coverage of the National Strategy for the Child 2019–2030, examined how online disinformation campaigns misled thousands of people, leading to mass protests. This work, which also linked to misinformation around the Istanbul Convention, attracted online attacks against me and my organisation, underlining the urgent need for digital education — especially among adults. I have also researched deep fake technologies and worked with international legal and AI experts to address their growing threat, particularly to vulnerable groups.
