World Social Forum 2024 Nepal: Civic Space, Disaster Preparedness, and SDGs

The World Social Forum 2024 is set to take place in Kathmandu, Nepal, from February 15th to 19th, under the slogan "Another World is Possible." Hosted by Forus member, the NGO Federation of Nepal (NFN), the forum provides a global platform for open dialogue, democratic debates, and the exploration of alternatives to neoliberal economic policies. In coordination with NFN, the forum will address crucial themes of Civic Space and Democracy, Disaster Preparedness and Management, and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

One of the events during the World Social Forum is the Global Assembly on Climate Change Actions & Disaster Risk Reduction. Recognizing the global nature of disasters and the importance of local to global initiatives, the assembly will focus on sharing experiences and knowledge on disaster preparedness and management. Emphasis will be placed on supporting communities and institutions, with a spotlight on the role of civil society in creating awareness, planning, implementation, monitoring, and accountability.

Another significant thematic session will revolve around the Agenda 2030 and the role of civil society organizations in monitoring and implementing the SDGs. The assembly aims to build awareness and capacity within peoples' movements and CSOs, providing a platform for sharing experiences, conducting critical reviews of SDGs, and preparing for People's Scorecard exercises.

This year's World Social Forum will address the alarming trend of shrinking civic space globally, particularly in Asia. With restrictions on civil society organizations, harassment of activists, and restrictive laws on the rise, the assembly aims to provide a platform for dialogue, collaboration, and strategy development. It seeks to strengthen civic space, protect the rights of civil society actors, and promote democratic participation.

Facing challenges to human rights and civic space, and with over 40 elections impacting 40% of the world's population in 2024, along with the imminent Summit of the Future and the urgent need to reconsider financing for sustainable development, the Forus network is set to actively participate in the World Social Forum.
