In response to the alarming decline in global wildlife populations, Tencent has initiated technology-driven conservation projects aimed at safeguarding vulnerable species such as snow leopards and migratory birds.
The Snow Leopard Conservation Project – launched in 2021 in collaboration with WWF, Shan Shui Conservation Center, Tencent and other members of the Snow Leopard network – utilizes artificial intelligence and infrared camera traps to monitor snow leopard populations in remote mountainous regions. This technology achieves a 98% accuracy rate in identifying individual animals, enhancing data collection and enabling targeted conservation efforts. The project has fostered international cooperation, bringing together stakeholders from countries including Mongolia, India, Nepal, Bhutan, Pakistan, the UK, Sweden, and the Netherlands to share resources and best practices.
Similarly, the Tencent Migratory Bird Protection Project employs digital tools to track migratory patterns, identify critical habitats, and implement protective measures along migratory routes. These initiatives exemplify Tencent's commitment to leveraging technology for ecological preservation.
This work aligns with several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and with the principles of Leaving No One Behind including:
-
SDG 13 – Climate Action: Implementing adaptive strategies to mitigate climate change impacts on biodiversity.
-
SDG 15 – Life on Land: Conserving terrestrial ecosystems and preventing species extinction.
-
SDG 17 – Partnerships for the Goals: Fostering international collaboration for sustainable development.
