In the wake of the devastating 7.3 magnitude earthquake that struck near Port Vila, Vanuatu, on December 17, 2024, FALE Vanuatu quickly activated its 72-hour contingency plan—mobilizing its limited resources and deep-rooted community connections to deliver swift, effective recovery efforts.
Recognizing the urgent needs for food, water, shelter, and first aid supplies, FALE Vanuatu coordinated local outreach in the capital. Communities were already working relentlessly to recover—and by pooling resources, FALE Vanuatu helped provide food and established two evacuation zones with youth leadership at the center.
These efforts supported over 700 displaced individuals in one locality—demonstrating the power of community-led humanitarian action in times of crisis.
This work aligns with several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and with the principles of Leaving No One Behind including:
-
SDG 1 & 2 – No Poverty & Zero Hunger: Addressing urgent food and basic needs of displaced people.
-
SDG 3 – Good Health and Well-being: Offering first aid and health support.
-
SDG 11 – Sustainable Cities and Communities: Creating safe evacuation zones.
-
SDG 13 – Climate Action: Supporting recovery in a climate-vulnerable region.
