How one community in Chiapas is taking care of the land and the future through reforestation.

In Chiapas, Mexico, in the face of advancing deforestation, María Torres - an indigenous community leader - promoted a community reforestation initiative based on traditional ecological knowledge. Together with local organisations and international agencies, she trained farmers in sustainable agroforestry techniques, promoting agricultural practices that protect the land and ensure food for families.
In just two years, the project succeeded in planting more than 10,000 trees, restoring degraded areas and mobilising the entire community towards a new vision of sustainable development, anchored in their knowledge and priorities. This story has also been reported in the Voluntary National Review of the Mexican Government as well as in the Alternative Civil Society Report.
This work aligns with several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and with the principles of Leaving No One Behind including:

- SDG 13 - Climate Action: Building local climate resilience.
