In the face of historical dispossession and persistent cultural plagiarism, Mexico has promoted ‘Original’ - a movement aimed at safeguarding the collective cultural rights of indigenous, Afro-Mexican and mestizo communities. This project seeks to dignify artisanal work by recognising and respecting its cultural and symbolic value, resisting the systemic invisibilisation faced by creative communities.
Launched as a comprehensive and participatory strategy, ‘Original’ promotes an equal dialogue between the state and communities, recognising their central role in the nation's cultural creation. Through public policies and awareness-raising campaigns, it promotes protection mechanisms against the misuse of traditional designs and fosters the creative sovereignty of indigenous peoples.
This work aligns with several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and with the principles of Leaving No One Behind including:
- SDG 10 – Reduced Inequalities: Recognising the cultural wealth of historically marginalised groups.
- SDG 11 – Sustainable Cities and Communities: Promoting vibrant and resilient cultures in local territories.
- SDG 17 – Partnerships for the Goals: Strengthening cooperation between the State, communities, and civil society.
