CAMPAIGN

#Unmute

For an enabling environment for civil society.

#Unmute (or #UNmute) started during the High-Level Political Forum (HLPF) in 2020 to raise awareness of the need of expanding - rather than shrinking - the space of civil society. Today, the recommendations prepared by the Permanent Mission of Denmark, the Permanent Mission of Costa Rica, UN Foundation, CIVICUS, Action for Sustainable Development, Global Focus, Action Aid International and Forus, have been endorsed by 52 member states and 334 civil society members. The campaign has evolved to include the voices of Forus members, activists and grassroots organisations demanding their voices to be “unmuted” both in offline and online spaces.

75 Years of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the Path Ahead UNmute Civil Society: Amplifying civil society voices for a stronger UN future 'It's Time UN Turned Ideas to ‘UNMute’ Civil Society into Action' Forus 2020 Highlights: #Unmute civil society UnMute Civil Society Day On Human Rights Day this year, we mark the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the 25th anniversary of the United Nations Declaration on Human Rights Defenders. These proclamations made by the United Nations were not just theoretical; it's crucial to reflect on our journey towards integrating human rights with development and to highlight where we still see “human rights failures”. For the fourth year running, as part of the UNmute initiative, a civil society coalition has voiced its concerns about these persistent problems. A joint letter, signed by Access Now, Action for Sustainable Development, Amnesty International, CIVICUS, Civil Society in Development (CISU), Democracy without Borders, Forus, Global Focus, Greenpeace International, Human Rights Watch, Oxfam International, TAP Network and UNA-UK, highlights the glaring disparities in access and space between NGOs and UN staff or government delegates. It highlights the need to move from symbolic recognition to active and equitable participation. Activists, CSOs and faith-based leaders this week pondered how you get a seat at the table when they couldn't even get access to the UN building. Forus was one of the co-organisers of a day-long UnMute Civil Society Forum on Friday 8th July during the UN HLPF, along with A4SD, GCAP and CIVICUS.
