How can national and regional civil society platforms communicate their distinctive role and added value — so that members, funders, partners, policymakers, and the public understand their distinctive role and added value as civic and democratic structures?
National and regional civil society platforms exist to enable collective action, amplify voices, strengthen legitimacy, and create impact that individual organisations cannot achieve alone. Yet communicating this added value is increasingly challenging in a context of declining trust, hostile narratives towards civil society, shrinking civic space, funding pressures, and increased competition for attention and resources.
This session will support communicators from Forus member platforms to move from describing what their platform does to communicating why their platform matters.
The focus is practical with participants developing clearer positioning, stronger narratives, and audience-specific messages that demonstrate the unique value of platforms as civic and democratic structures.
Tangible outcomes for participants
Each participant leaves with:
✅ A clearer articulation of their platform’s added value
✅ Two–three core messages for different audiences
✅ A tested short pitch they can adapt for communications materials, websites, fundraising, advocacy, or social media
Connection to the wider Forus learning journey
This session lays the strategic foundation for a series of addtional practical learning opportunities. Through the Forus Learning Mondays, participants will be able to apply the concepts discussed and turn them into concrete communications outputs tailored to their own contexts, audiences, and objectives with hands-on practical tracks such as:
-
developing visual campaigns
-
improving websites
-
strengthening social media presence
-
creating storytelling formats
-
producing communication materials
-
experimenting with new communication tools
